Hey, have you noticed how much China’s space exploration has been in the news recently? I have to say, this latest is something that makes a lot of sense: a lunar GPS system for navigation.
If you’re going to have a colony on the Moon, and hopefully it begins as a small group of scientists, then you’re going to want a way they can get back to camp if they wander too far and get lost.
(There’s a reason the absent-minded professor stereotype exists. Trust me on this.)

On the book writing front, I’ve wrapped up Battlefield Diplomacy and am now diving into two short stories—one for an anthology late this year that has an all-star lineup, including Rick Partlow, Terry Maggert, JN Chaney, James S. Aaron, Jeff Haskell, Jonathan Brazee and more. Look for Operation Sombra, coming your way soon.
Originally, I had planned to write the final tale in the Biogenesis War series, but the more I thought about it, the less sense it made. Anthologies should introduce you to a new universe, not wrap it up!
So I’ll be releasing The Dagger’s Edge (working title) as a novella later this year. Then it’s on to the sequel to Battlefield Diplomacy. And that, as they say, is a wrap for the rest of 2024.
What’s your summertime reading lineup look like?
Last week, I talked about the SF I was reading. This week, it’s thrillers. I just finished Four Minutes by Andrews & Wilson. I have to say, I loved it—right up until the ending. I’m no fan of cliffhangers, and this just left too many things hanging. Having said that, I’m also aware that they wrote this as a pilot for a TV series. Taking that into account, the ending makes sense—though I still don’t like loose threads.
Having said that…
There’s a different Andrews & Wilson book that’s my Must-Read pick for Summer 2024:
If you’re a fan of the movie Hunt for Red October (or the book, or both), then I cannot recommend Act of Defiance enough. It’s fantastic.
This is their first foray into the Jack Ryan Clancy-verse, as they take over for Marc Cameron. And it’s the best homage possible to Red October. I’ll be sorely disappointed if it’s not made into a movie.
If you only have time to read one book this summer, then Act of Defiance has my endorsement. (NOTE: These links are affiliate links, which means I get a few pennies off any sale if you choose to buy…)
Got a book you can’t put down? Let me know—either by commenting below, or shoot me an email reply.
As always, thanks for stopping by the Speakeasy and hanging with me for a few!
