Pocket Scout: Field-testing a Foldable Drone
Research is catching up to sci-fi, real fast
This is a short email/post, just to share a cool new research project that leaked earlier this week. I shared this with my followers over at the Spacetime Speakeasy on Facebook. So if this looks familiar, that’s because, well… it is.
It comes from the Advanced Vertical Flight Laboratory at Texas A&M. This 112 gram micro air vehicle (MAV) features foldable propeller arms that can lock into a compact rectangular profile comparable to the size of a smartphone. The vehicle can be launched by simply throwing it in the air, at which point the arms would unfold and autonomously stabilize to a hovering state.
It’s the kind of thing you’d read in a SF book, and it’s being developed right now. Cool stuff!
That’s it, folks.
Short and sweet this time. And as always, thanks for taking time out of your day to stop by the Speakeasy.
Fair skies & tailwinds,
L.L. Richman
